Sister Schaefermeyer didn't tell you about her reaction in Stake Conference. I was wearing the one set of English translation headsets and relaying the Stake President's talk to Shanna and the Lindsays. The topic was strengthening the church in the home and nation, and you should have seen Shanna's face when I relayed that the Stk Pres said that every member's home should have a Liahona in it. Of course the President was referring to the magazine but Shanna thought they had the actual instrument. I told her they only had GPS units just like us.
Today was spent in discussions with the Lindsays and the Francoms. Francoms are the Humanitarian Country directors for the DM and Lindsays served as HS directors for Egypt. They took us to visit one of their NGO's (Non-Government Organizations) who fit prosthetic limbs here in Santo Domingo. They are trying to get cheaper devices so they can afford to provide more applicances to more people. Currently the cost is at least $1,000.00. While we were there we met an Elder's Quorum President who had traveled with his first councilor who has a prosthetic leg and had come to see about a replacement. We were warmly received by the doctor and were shown around his facility and the process used to make the limbs.
Following dinner with Brother Lilly, Lindsays, and Francoms we attended a FHE with all of the senior missionaries affiliated with the MTC, Area Office, and Temple. They talked about the history of the Church in the DR and had two couples who were pioneers in the church talk about their conversion and bear their testimony. It was impressive to realize they were the pioneers even if they didn't have a handcart.
We also visited a Catholic church built in the 1500s and went to a cigar factory, but thats is a topic for another day.
